  8. The Internet contains a tremendous amount of information and 
  9. there are 
  10. many different ways to access this information.  At first this may 
  11. seem 
  12. confusing, but once you understand how to use each accessing method 
  13. and 
  14. how they differ, you will understand how they complement each other.

  16. The NetManage applications are listed below.  To get more 
  17. information about any of them,

  30. <h2><A name="icham1">WebSurfer</a></h2>

  32. WebSurfer is a client application which allows you to browse 
  33. information on the World Wide Web (WWW).  
  34. The WWW is a set of servers on the 
  35. Internet that are 
  36. interconnected through hypertext.  Hypertext is a method of presenting 
  37. information
  38. where selected items, or items that are highlighted in blue, can be 
  39. expanded at any 
  40. time to provide other information 
  41. about the item.  These selected items are links which allow
  42. you to move from document to document and server to server.  
  43. The WWW is unique 
  44. in its use of hypertext along with multimedia such as sound, video, and 
  45. graphics.
  46. <p>
  47. The WWW is split into two parts, client and server.  The server 
  48. manages the data and answers requests from the client, while the client
  49. application (WebSurfer) allows you to connect to all the servers 
  50. and gather information.
  51. <p>
  52. NetManage has constructed a page of useful starting points to help 
  53. you get 
  54. acquainted with the WWW.  We call it the

  59. <h2><A name="icham2">Gopher</a></h2>
  60. <img src="gophract.gif"><p>
  61. The Gopher application allows you to browse through information 
  62. located on
  63. the 3,600 Gopher servers (or GopherSpace) around the world.  
  64. The resource 
  65. material in GopherSpace consists of data in a variety of formats such as 
  66. text, images, sounds, and services such as Telnet connections, 
  67. index servers, and 
  68. phone book servers.
  69. <p>  
  70. When you open your NetManage Gopher application, you will find that it 
  71. already points to the NetManage Gopher server.  You will also find 
  72. that the 
  73. NetManage Gopher software has another pointer to the central 
  74. Gopher server.  
  75. <p>
  76. The list of Gopher servers will seem quite long.  There is an online 
  77. catalog, known as Veronica, 
  78. that allows you to do key word searches of GopherSpace.  Your 
  79. NetManage Gopher application 
  80. supports 
  81. this search tool.  To find GopherSpace catalogs start at the central 
  82. Gopher 
  83. server.

  85. <h2><A name="icham3">FTP</a></h2>
  86. <img src="ftpact.gif"><p>
  87. The FTP (File Transfer Protocol) application is used to transfer 
  88. files between Internet 
  89. computers.  Both client and server applications are provided with 
  90. NetManage software.  The FTP client downloads files published on any 
  91. remote server
  92. on the Internet to your PC.  The FTP server permits others to access 
  93. files on your local
  94. hard drive while you are connected to the Internet.

  96. The NetManage FTP application also provides an intuitive point and 
  97. click interface that keeps track of sites 
  98. that you have connected to so that you can return to them easily.

  100. <h2><A name="icham4">Archie</a></h2>
  101. <img src="archieac.gif"><p>
  102. The Archie application is an Internet information system for gathering 
  103. data and indexing widely
  104. distributed collections of data.  Archie allows users to retrieve 
  105. public
  106. domain files (of text, graphics, or sound) from anonymous FTP hosts 
  107. (servers 
  108. that can be accessed by anyone on the Internet).  
  109. <p>
  110. The NetManage 
  111. Archie software comes preconfigured with a list of Archie servers 
  112. located 
  113. around the world.  Archie is also
  114. linked to the NetManage FTP software which makes it easy to 
  115. download
  116. files once you find them.

  118. <h2><A name="icham5">NEWTNews</a></h2>
  119. <img src="newsact.gif"><p>
  120. The NEWTNews application allows you to subscribe to any of the 
  121. thousands of
  122. newsgroups on the Internet.  You can read and post articles, 
  123. post follow-up articles, and check for new article groups. 
  124. <p>
  125. The first time you start NEWTNews, it may take longer than normal 
  126. because 
  127. the application will 
  128. download a list of newsgroups that you can subscribe to.  NetManage 
  129. provides a 
  130. newsserver, newtnews.netmanage.com, which is set for automatic 
  131. connection
  132. in your newsreader.  The NetManage newsreader allows you to sort messages 
  133. by date, sender or topic.  Once you are using your Internet provider's 
  134. newsserver, you can post messages to any 
  135. of the groups or respond via Email to anyone in the group.

  137. <h2><A name="icham6">Mail</a></h2>
  138. <img src="mailact.gif"><p>
  139. The Mail application provides electronic mail (Email) services 
  140. that allow you to send and receive mail and to retrieve mail from a 
  141. server.  
  142. Your Internet provider will supply you with an Email account and a 
  143. mailbox.  
  144. <p>
  145. In addition to sending and receiving mail over the Internet, you can 
  146. use NetManages MIME capability to send attachments (such as 
  147. spreadsheets or graphics) with your mail.  There are also mailing lists 
  148. you can subscribe to 
  149. that allow you to participate in discussions or monitor areas of interest.  
  150. NetManage's Rules feature can sort messages from 
  151. these mailing lists and automatically put them in folders to be read later.

  153. <h2><A name="icham7">Telnet</a></h2>

  155. The Telnet application is software that enables your PC to 
  156. emulate a virtual terminal so that you can communicate with a wide variety
  157. of remote systems (including other computers where you have an account).

  159. <h2><A name="icham8">WhoIs</a></h2>
  160. <img src="whoisact.gif"><p>
  161. The WhoIs application is a directory service that
  162. displays information about Internet users.  The information includes
  163. the user's full name, U.S. mailing address, telephone number, and email 
  164. address.
  165. WhoIs comes preconfigured with the names of various WhoIs 
  166. servers around the Internet.

  168. <h2><A name="icham9">Finger</a></h2>
  169. <img src="fingerac.gif"><p>
  170. The Finger application displays information about each user on a specified
  171. host.  This information includes the users login name, full name, the time
  172. they logged in, as well as the terminal or host from which they logged in.
  173. If no user name is specified, Finger displays information on all the users
  174. currently logged in to the specified host.

  176. To test out Finger on the Internet, fill in the host field with 
  177. "geophys.washington.edu" and the user field with "quake", press the 
  178. finger button
  179. and you will get earthquake information.

  181. <h2><A name="icham10">Ping</a></h2>

  183. The Ping application is a diagnostic tool for checking your network 
  184. connection to a particular system on your network, it is useful for
  185. checking to see if you Internet connection is active and working.<p>
